Navigating Orthodontic Emergencies with Dr. Bastian
Orthodontic care is a transformative journey, one that leads to a beautiful, healthy smile. However, as with any journey, there may be a few bumps along the way.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies
Orthodontic emergencies can vary in nature, but they all have one thing in common: they require prompt attention. Here are some common orthodontic emergencies and how we approach them with our patients in mind:
Broken Brackets or Wires
A broken bracket or wire can be uncomfortable and may cause irritation to your cheeks or gums. In such cases, it’s essential to contact our office for guidance. We understand the discomfort this can cause, and we’ll work with you to schedule an appointment promptly. Dr. Bastian and his team are committed to your well-being, ensuring that your comfort is a top priority.
Loose Bands or Brackets
When bands or brackets become loose, they may not function as effectively. This could potentially extend the duration of your treatment. We recognize the inconvenience this can cause and will address it promptly to ensure the continuity of your orthodontic journey. If a bracket, band or wire is loosened, please call our office immediately; the brackets may need to be refitted. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, we recommend using fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. You may also need to slide a bracket off at night or over a weekend before you are able to come to our office. Please call our office on the next business day so we can schedule an appointment for you.
Poking or Loose Wires
Loose or poking wires can lead to irritation and discomfort. We understand that these situations can be distressing, and our team is here to help. If the wire is irritating your cheeks or gums, you can move it away from the irritated area by using a cotton swab or eraser. If you cannot move the wire, cover the end of it with a small piece of cotton or wax to relieve irritation. If the wire is still painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you need to cut the wire or cannot resolve the wire irritation, call us for an appointment. Dr. Bastian’s patient-centered approach emphasizes a compassionate response to orthodontic emergencies, ensuring that you receive the care and relief you need.
Lost or Broken Retainers
Retainers are an essential part of maintaining your beautifully aligned smile. If your retainer is lost or broken, it’s vital to replace it as soon as possible. Dr. Bastian’s dedication to patient care extends to the retention phase of orthodontics, where we provide guidance and solutions for retainer-related emergencies.
Many patients lose a separator over the course of their treatment. If you lose a separator, call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.
Discomfort With Braces and Orthodontic Treatment
During the first week after your braces are placed and after routine adjustments, you may feel some soreness or discomfort. This is normal, and you do not need to worry. You may want to take acetaminophen or another non-aspirin pain reliever if your teeth are sore after adjustment appointments. You may also wish to use a warm washcloth or heating pad to reduce soreness in the jaws.
Orthodontic emergencies can be a challenging aspect of your treatment, but they don’t have to be a source of worry. At Sullivan Bastian Orthodontics, we’re more than just your orthodontic care providers; we’re your partners on this transformative journey.
